The number of children passing through Hungary is increasing exponentially among asylum-seekers as there are more and more families with 4-6 children. Unfortunately, they are obviously poorer families with exhausted parents who try to keep the family together in the crowd of several thousands.

In Turkey, it was 25 degrees a few days ago but when they arrive here in the cold, rainy autumn weather they realise how unprepared they are. The sock and shoes of children are often wet and they cough and have a cold already. Many small children are carried for long distances by their exhausted parents.

I kindly ask our volunteers to pay more attention to them, wherever they work and initiate discussion with the parents and offer help because they often need it but they don’t know where and how to ask for it.

This is how I spotted a father yesterday who was carrying his 8-10 years old daughter on his shoulder. She was in a catatonic, nearly unconscious state (she is the girl in red coat with a hat on the shoulder of his father). Although she had a hat, she only had socks on her feet. Thanks to a quick medical check and treatment, we avoided further more serious problems.

Yesterday at 7 pm there were hundreds of people walking through the darkness at the Hegyeshalom border crossing when I spotted a little girl of 5-6 who has standing by the road alone silently crying. It turned out she lost his family. With the help of an arabic interpreter, we found out the name of his parents and started walking through the crowd shouting their names. Nobody knew her on the Hungarian side, so we headed towards the Austrian side when her father suddenly came towards us also crying…
This story had a happy ending but we need to pay close attention to be able to help these children.
